Learning something new everyday

Untitled-178

Doug Firebaugh once said “Everyday do something that will inch you closer to a better tomorrow”.

This is the first thing that I bumped into as I checked my twitter account Monday morning. Have you ever stopped to consider how much information is out there, just waiting for you to access it, interpret it and utilize it? Everyday we bump into numerous opportunities to learn new things but most of us ignore them being comfortable in what we know and not daring to venture out of our comfort zone. However, how long can one lounge in the comfort of ignorance and redundancy? (this is where one inevitably heads if they do not keep learning). It is impossible (I think) for any one person to acquire all the knowledge in the world, and even if there were a means of doing this, there are so many unexplained phenomena around us. It is however possible for a person to increase their knowledge base exponentially.

That quote got me thinking, ‘what do I really know?’ I sat down and compiled a list of what I know and I found that it was precious little. And even that little, I do not know from top to bottom. It was a wake up call. I need to learn a little more each day.

At the end of the day I should be able to sit down and note down the new thing(s) I learnt, as should you. So below are a few points on what can help you learn a bit more each day (as experimented upon from Monday)

Set aside a little time to learn

This can be five minutes or more and focus on an area of interest and learn something new.

Read

This is by far the most convenient method of learning. Carry a book in your bag, read during the commute to work.

Keep a notebook and pen on your bedside table

Every night, write down what you have learnt during the day. Also take time to go over what you have written previously so you do not forget.

Practice what you have learnt

This is if you have the opportunity and it is safe. If you learnt about herbal remedies to snake bites I would not advise going out to test them out. However if you learnt a new way to apply filters to an image that I would suggest you try then send me a link if it works.

So cheers to learning new things every day and Happy Madaraka Day to all!.
